Always On Display Wallpaper: What It Is and How to Choose One

An always-on display wallpaper is the image or style your phone shows on its dimmed screen while it is otherwise off. Whether you can use your own wallpaper there depends on your phone: some show a dimmed version of your lock-screen wallpaper, others only a clock and notifications. The best choices are mostly dark with one clear subject, because the always-on display shows little of the image and dark pixels use less power on OLED screens.

An always-on display (AOD) is not the same as your ordinary lock screen. What it can show depends on the phone model, software version and display settings. Some phones offer a wallpaper on AOD; others show a clock, notifications or a simpler image. A new wallpaper cannot add a display feature your phone does not support.

Check your phone before choosing a wallpaper

Search Settings for “Always On Display” and check the options available on your device. Samsung documents a “Show Lock screen wallpaper” option for supported configurations, alongside controls for when AOD appears. The menu and availability differ between models and software versions. Do not assume another phone's screenshot describes yours.

If you only see clock or notification controls, consult the manufacturer's guide for your exact model. Downloading a higher-resolution picture will not unlock a missing wallpaper setting.

Choose an image that works with the clock

Try a background with a quiet area behind the clock and notifications. A dark, simple composition is an easy starting point, but the best crop depends on your own layout. Move the crop until the main subject remains visible without fighting the text. Check both a bright lock screen and the dimmed always-on state.

For example, put a mountain silhouette below a clock near the top, rather than positioning a bright peak directly behind its digits. This is a composition suggestion, not a requirement imposed by Android.

Test the real idle screen

1. Set the wallpaper and inspect the lock-screen preview.
2. Lock the phone and wait for AOD to appear.
3. Check the clock, notification icons and subject in your usual room lighting.
4. Adjust the image or AOD options if the result is too busy.

The normal wallpaper preview cannot guarantee the final always-on appearance. Brightness, available AOD options and power-saving settings can affect it. If AOD turns off unexpectedly, check its schedule and your manufacturer's power-saving guidance.
